DeFi is an umbrella term describing decentralized financial tools including exchanges, lending platforms, and more. These tools enable anyone to access financial services without intermediaries while oftentimes providing significantly higher yields than what was available in legacy finance. Given these significant advantages, it is not surprising to see that the total value of assets locked in DeFi protocols has grown from about $18B at the beginning of 2021 to over $238B by the end of the year.

Despite the tremendous growth of DeFi last year, there is still a lot to be done in terms of reaching mainstream adoption. High transaction fees, lack of knowledge, and security concerns present significant barriers to entry. Some have suggested that traditional banks may integrate DeFi into their backend to offer better yields to their customers.

Prof. Dr. Philipp Sandner has founded the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center (FSBC). In 2018 and in 2019, he was ranked as one of the “top 30” economists by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), a major newspaper in Germany. Further, he belonged to the “Top 40 under 40” — a ranking by the German business magazine Capital. Since 2017, he is member of the FinTech Council of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Germany. The expertise of Prof. Sandner includes blockchain technology in general, crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, the digital programmable Euro, tokenization of assets and rights, and digital identity. Alexander Schreibmaier, DeFi Talents alumnus. Alex Zinder is the Head of Ledger Enterprise Solutions bringing more than 15 years of experience in driving the adoption of emerging technologies in major financial services organizations. Alex joined Ledger Enterprise in March 2021 after almost two decades in capital markets technology. He previously worked at Nasdaq as director of global software development and associate vice president of enterprise architecture roles. More recently, Alex was working on the next generation of digital capital markets infrastructure as a senior advisor and head of architecture role at SIX Digital Exchange.

Daniel Oon is Head of DeFi at Algorand Foundation. Before Algorand, Daniel was a senior project manager at TZ APAC managing Tezos' portfolio of grants in the Asia Pacific across all verticals. Prior to Tezos, Daniel was a blockchain specialist for Deloitte Consulting working on enterprise blockchain engagements.
