Numerous cryptocurrencies have been developed in recent years and have taken their place in the market. The question which comes up is how do regulators of traditional currencies like the euro relate to cryptos? How strong is a digital euro? How would it be used, and what does the exact design look like?

About the lecturers

Jonas Gross is Chairman of the Digital Euro Association (DEA), co-host of the German podcast "Bitcoin, Fiat, & Rock'n' Roll", and member of the expert panel of the European Blockchain Observatory and Forum. Jonas is a project manager at the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center (FSBC) and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. His main research focus is central bank digital currencies, stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies.

Dr. Joachim Schwerin is Principal Economist in the unit responsible for the Digital Transformation of Industry within the Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) of the European Commission. He is responsible for developing the policy approach of DG GROW towards the Token Economy and Distributed-Ledger Technologies as well as their applications for industry and SMEs. Moreover, he coordinates initiatives to foster the development of digital skills for the European industrial ecosystems. He regularly contributes to policy development in digital policy fields, including the MiCA Regulation, the preparation of the digital Euro and blockchain infrastructures for the real economy, such as for anti-counterfeiting technologies and for the hydrogen value chain.

 

Alexander Bechtel is Head of Digital Assets & Currencies Strategy at Deutsche Bank (Corporate Bank). He has done a Ph.D. at the University of St.Gallen, where he still holds a position as an external lecturer. Alexander regularly publishes articles, podcasts, and research on monetary policy and digital currencies. He has worked as an external consultant at the European Central Bank and spent a research stay at Stanford University.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Mayer is Founding Director of the Flossbach von Storch Research Institute. Before this, he was Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank Group and Head of DB Research. Thomas Mayer held positions at Goldman Sachs, Salomon Brothers, and, before entering the private sector, at the International Monetary Fund and the Kiel Institute.

 

Maximilian Forster is co-founder of CashOnLedger Technologies GmbH and CBO. In his previous role, he helped to build up the DLT and blockchain service offering of KPMG and Accenture and worked as a technology investment expert for Picus Capital. Furthermore, he has contributed to several publications including the Goethe University Frankfurt’s “Digital Banking Practical Handbook”, Bitkom’s Digital Euro on the blockchain as well as the WCLF Tax und IP Gesprächsband 2019.
